FAQ

how are answer sets curated?

Each prompt starts as a hand-written bank of the answers people actually say, with their spellings and romanisations as aliases, so “shumai”, “siew mai” and 烧卖 all land on Siu Mai. Then it is deepened from open datasets where they exist (GeoNames for cities, Natural Earth for rivers and peaks, OpenFlights for airlines, PokeAPI for Pokémon, LTA data for MRT stations, open K-pop data) and from hand-written lists for food and culture. The sources are merged and cleaned into one bank, and hand-written answers always win a collision. Some banks now hold thousands of answers.

how is rarity determined?

Every answer starts with an estimate of how many climbers would say it, made with LLM help and then a manual pass. Once real people play, their answers count too: after about 200 climbers on a prompt, the crowd outweighs the estimate. An answer that everyone suddenly gives sinks to Plain Rice.

what are the tiers?
  • Plain Rice: The answer everyone blurts out.10
  • Kiasu: Tried to be clever. So did the whole queue.15
  • House Special: Solid. On every menu.30
  • Hidden Menu: Off the laminated menu. Nice.60
  • Grandma's Recipe: A secret recipe. Seriously deep cut.85
  • One in a Scallion: Absurd. The chef bows.100
what is the scallion?

Every prompt has one hand-picked gem: the scallion. Land it and you score One in a Scallion, 100 points, every time. No other answer can reach that tier. Once you finish the climb, tap any prompt on the end screen to see its scallion and every other answer it accepts.

why is the scallion sometimes less rare than other deep cuts?

Because it isn't picked on rarity alone. Past a certain depth, rarity gets hard to tell apart, so the scallion is also picked for fun: the answer that's most satisfying to land. Some banked answers are so obscure that maybe one climber would ever type them. The scallion should be one that a few of you actually get. Rarer deep cuts still score Grandma's Recipe.

what is “too clever”?

The go-to “obscure” pick that isn't actually obscure: chicken feet for dim sum, ketchup for borrowed words. Each prompt has one. It tops out at Kiasu, however rare it looks.

why was my answer not listed?

Probably a missed source, sorry. When the bank doesn't know an answer, an AI judge checks it against the prompt's rule. If it's real, it's accepted and the judge places it on a rarity tier, from Plain Rice to Grandma's Recipe, next to the banked answers it most resembles. If the judge has any doubt, or is slow, it says no. Fair answers that keep getting missed get added to the bank.

how does autocorrect work?

Small typos are forgiven: one letter off for answers of five letters or more, two for nine or more, swapped letters counting as one. Aliases are checked too, which can surprise you. So there are two guards: a typo can never change the first letter of a word, and a typo equally close to two different answers isn't matched at all. When a guess was corrected, the reveal shows what you typed.

can I suggest a prompt or report a bad call?

Yes please. Every reveal has a “bad call?” row for one-tap reports, and the suggest page takes new prompts and longer feedback. Everything lands in a queue a human reads; good prompts become future packs.

what's the scallion pass?

The daily climb is free, always. The pass is a one-time S$2.67 that unlocks unlimited climbs past the first 3, archive days older than 7 days, and hosting party rooms (friends join free). No account, no subscription. It keeps the servers and the answer judge running. Get it here.

is this krillion?

No. Scallion is an independent fan project inspired by Krillion, with its own prompts, answer banks and art, and an Asian spin. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Krillion or its creators. More on the legal page.

how many climbs are there?

25 climbs of 7 prompts right now, with more packs coming. Unlimited mode walks through all of them. The daily climb is the same for everyone and resets at midnight Singapore time.
